We are continuing our live music programme with SOUNDkitchen Series #03 on 13 September at VIVID Projects in Birmingham. This event presents three duo performances from Midlands based artists including our third New Collaborations commission from bass player Chris Mapp and electronic musician Ben Ramsay. After performing for the first time as a duo earlier this year SOUNDkitchen’s own Annie Mahtani and Iain Armstrong will play a live laptop set featuring field recording and live electronics. The third act was selected from our call for Birmingham based artists and presents a live AV set from Formuls a.k.a. James Dooley and Matt Parker.

Formuls is the algorithmic performance environment built with Pure Data by James Dooley. James performs slowly emerging feedback patterns that gradually build into a rich, oscillating backdrop of finely tuned noise. He performs alongside collaborator, Matt Parker who works with real-time fractal visualisations that are responsive to both the feedback systems generated by Formuls as well as the external environment.

James Dooley is a digital artist and creative coder based in Birmingham. James’ performance and installation works focus on creating a sense of place — a meta-environment. Influenced by complexity science, his works rely on the interactions between many simple elements acting autonomously that coalesce to produce emergent forms.
